The Sheepfold is a large off-leash area located in Stoneham, in the central section of Middlesex Fells Reservation. The park features wide open fields, wooded edges, and plenty of room for dogs to run. It's maintained by the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and is free to use.
The Sheepfold is one large, open area — there are no separate sections for big and small dogs. Its wide-open field and wooded edges give dogs plenty of room to run and socialize together, making it ideal for active dogs that need space to play.
Rules & Regulations
- Dogs must be licensed and up to date on vaccinations
- Owners must have a leash on hand at all times, even in off-leash areas
- Clean up after your dog — bags are available on site
- Aggressive dogs must be removed immediately
- Maximum 4 dogs per handler
- No puppies under 4 months
Parking & Getting There
The primary access point is the Sheepfold parking lot in Stoneham. This lot fills quickly on weekend mornings. Arrive early or check the South Border Road lot as an alternative and walk in via trail. See our full parking guide for details.
Best Times to Visit
Weekday mornings are the least crowded and ideal for dogs who prefer a calmer environment. Weekend afternoons are the busiest. The park is open year-round including winter, though the fields can get muddy during spring thaw.
