About Middlesex Fells Reservation

Middlesex Fells Reservation is a 2,575-acre state park located just five miles north of Boston, spanning the towns of Malden, Medford, Melrose, Stoneham, and Winchester, Massachusetts. It is one of the oldest state reservations in the United States and one of the easiest natural areas to get to in greater Boston.

The Park

The Fells — as locals call it — features rugged rocky terrain, dense mixed forest, scenic ponds, and 100+ miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and walking. The reservation is managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and is open to the public year-round, free of charge.

History

Middlesex Fells Reservation was established in 1894, making it one of the earliest metropolitan park reservations in the country. The land was preserved largely through the efforts of conservationists including Elizur Wright, a 19th-century abolitionist and mathematician who campaigned to protect the Fells from development. The historic Elizur Wright Tower at Pine Hill summit is named in his honor.

What to Do at Middlesex Fells

The reservation offers year-round outdoor recreation for all skill levels:

• Hiking — 100+ miles of trails ranging from easy walks to challenging ridge climbs
• Mountain Biking — miles of singletrack trail through the forest
• Dog Park — the Sheepfold, a 5-acre off-leash field
• Fishing — bass, perch, and pickerel at Spot Pond and other water bodies
• Kayaking & Canoeing — rentals available on Spot Pond through Paddle Boston
• Cross-Country Skiing — trails open for skiing when snow conditions allow

Getting There
