Kayaking and Canoeing at Middlesex Fells Reservation

Spot Pond: Where to Rent & Launch
Kayak and canoe rentals at Spot Pond are available through Paddle Boston, located right at the pond. They offer single and tandem kayaks and canoes — no experience necessary. Check their site for current rental rates, hours, and availability before you go.
Note: Personal vessels are not permitted on the water at Middlesex Fells. Paddle Boston rentals are the only way to get on Spot Pond.
Parking is available near the launch area, but it's limited. On busy summer weekends it fills quickly — plan to arrive early or consider a weekday visit.
Once you're on the water, the pond opens up in front of you. The shoreline is mostly undeveloped, ringed by the forested hills of the Fells on all sides. You can paddle the perimeter, cut across the middle, or find a quiet cove and just drift for a while.

What to Expect on the Water
Spot Pond is calm, flat water — ideal for recreational paddling. There's no current, no rapids, and no significant wind exposure on most days. It's a good spot for beginners and a reliable destination for experienced paddlers who want a relaxed outing.

Fishing from a kayak or canoe: Spot Pond is stocked and popular with anglers. Largemouth bass, yellow perch, and chain pickerel are among the species found here. A valid Massachusetts fishing license is required — see our Fishing page for more.

Rules for Paddlers
- Rentals only. Personal kayaks, canoes, and other private watercraft are not permitted on Spot Pond. Rentals through Paddle Boston are the only option.
- No motorized boats. No gas or electric motors are permitted on Spot Pond.
- No swimming. Swimming is not permitted at Spot Pond or anywhere in the reservation.
- Life jackets required. All paddlers must have a Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device (PFD) on board. Children must wear theirs at all times on the water.
- No overnight use. The reservation closes at dusk — all watercraft must be out of the water before then.
- Pack out what you bring in. There are no trash facilities at the boat launch. Leave no trace.
Best Times to Paddle
- Weekday mornings are the quietest on the pond. You'll have the water mostly to yourself and the best chance of seeing wildlife.
- Late spring through early fall offers the most comfortable paddling conditions. Water temperatures are warmest from July through September.
- Avoid summer holiday weekends if you want a relaxed experience — the park and parking areas get very busy on Fourth of July weekend and Labor Day.
- Fall paddling is underrated at Spot Pond. The foliage reflects off the water and the crowds thin out significantly after Labor Day.
