About Spot Pond

Spot Pond sits on the eastern edge of Middlesex Fells Reservation and is bordered by wooded trails on three sides. The pond is part of the Middlesex Fells watershed and serves as a backdrop for some of the most scenic walks and paddles in the region. In fall, the foliage reflecting off the water makes it one of the most scenic spots in the reservation.

It's one of the larger bodies of water in the reservation — big enough to feel like you're genuinely out on the water, small enough to explore in an afternoon. Surrounded by conservation land on all sides, it's a remarkably quiet place to visit, especially on a weekday morning when the trails around it are still empty.

Wildlife at Spot Pond

The pond is an excellent spot for wildlife watching. Great blue herons, osprey, cormorants, and a variety of waterfowl are commonly seen along the shoreline. Turtles are often visible sunning on logs near the water's edge.

Kayaking & Canoeing

Spot Pond is one of the few places near Boston where you can kayak or canoe in a natural, forested setting. The pond is calm and well-suited for paddlers of all skill levels. Because Spot Pond serves as a backup water supply, personal watercraft aren't permitted on it — paddling is only available through the Paddle Boston rental concession on-site.

Fishing at Spot Pond

Spot Pond is stocked and offers good fishing for largemouth bass, yellow perch, and chain pickerel. A valid Massachusetts fishing license is required for anglers 15 and older. Bank fishing is available at several spots around the pond's edge.
