Mustang Trail at Middlesex Fells Reservation
The Mustang Trail is a short doubletrack path in the West Fells, near the South Border Road corridor in Winchester. At roughly 0.2 miles (about 1,220 feet), it isn't a destination in its own right — it's a connector that hikers and mountain bikers use to link up longer routes through the western trail network, most often alongside the nearby Red Cross Path.
It's easy underfoot and beginner-friendly, so it's best thought of as a quick link in a bigger loop rather than a ride or hike to plan around on its own.
Trail Overview
- Distance: About 0.2 miles (1,220 feet), one-way
- Difficulty: Easy
- Trail Type: Doubletrack connector
- Section: West Fells, near South Border Road, Winchester
- Trail markers: Not part of DCR's officially blazed trail system — an informal path documented by local trail users rather than a signed, named route
- Best for: Linking up with nearby trails, not a standalone destination
If you're looking for the reservation's signature mountain biking route, that's the separate Mountain Bike Loop — a 6.5-mile, green-blazed loop based at the Sheepfold that circles the North, Middle, and South Reservoirs. See our Mountain Biking page for that route. The Mustang Trail is a much smaller piece of the western trail network, useful mainly for stringing together a longer ride or hike rather than as a destination by itself.
Trailheads & Parking
The nearest parking is the South Border Road lot in Winchester, close to the trailhead and to the adjoining Red Cross Path. See our full parking guide for directions, lot details, and weekend tips.
What to Expect on the Trail
There isn't much to plan for here — it's a short, flat-to-rolling doubletrack link with easy footing, over in a few minutes on foot or bike. Its value is in what it connects to, not in the trail itself.

Tips Before You Go
- Bikes must yield to hikers on multi-use trails. Call out when passing.
- Check trail conditions before you go. Like most trails at the Fells, this one can get muddy after rain — give it a day or two to dry out.
- Dogs are welcome on leash reservation-wide.
