Cross-Country Skiing at Middlesex Fells Reservation
When snow falls, Middlesex Fells Reservation turns into one of the more accessible cross-country skiing spots near Boston. The reservation's extensive trail network opens up for skiing when conditions allow, and the forests and ridges look completely different under snow.
Skiing at Middlesex Fells
Cross-country skiing is permitted on trails throughout Middlesex Fells Reservation whenever there is sufficient snow cover. The same trails used for hiking and mountain biking in warmer months become natural ski routes in winter. No grooming is provided — conditions depend entirely on recent snowfall and temperatures.
Best Trails for Skiing
The wider, flatter trails in the reservation are best suited for classic cross-country skiing. The rockier, more technical trails like the Skyline Trail and Rock Circuit Trail can be skiable after significant snowfall but require more experience due to the uneven terrain beneath the snow.
Beginners are best served by the broader carriage roads and perimeter paths that run through the lower sections of the reservation.
Conditions & Timing
The greater Boston area averages several skiable snowfalls per winter, though conditions can change quickly. The Fells typically sees good skiing conditions after storms that drop 6 or more inches. Warmer temperatures and rain can make trails icy or muddy — check conditions before heading out.
What to Bring
- Classic cross-country skis or snowshoes (both work well on Fells trails)
- Waterproof boots and warm layers
- Trail map — see our Trail Map page
- Water and snacks for longer outings
Getting There & Parking
The South Border Road parking lot in Medford is the most convenient starting point for winter visits. Parking lots are plowed after major storms but may have limited capacity. See our Parking & Directions guide for all lot locations.
The reservation is open year-round including winter. See Hours & Fees for access information.
