Mountain Biking at Middlesex Fells Reservation

Middlesex Fells Reservation is a popular mountain biking destination in eastern Massachusetts, with miles of singletrack just minutes from Boston. From flowy forest paths to technical rocky terrain, the Fells has options for riders of all skill levels.

Trail Overview

Mountain biking is permitted on designated trails throughout the western section of Middlesex Fells Reservation. The trail network is rocky and rooted in many sections, with significant elevation change — making it more suitable for intermediate to advanced riders. Beginners can find gentler options on wider paths around the reservation's perimeter.

What to Expect

Middlesex Fells singletrack is known for its technical character — granite ledges, tight switchbacks, and fast descents through dense forest. The trail system is well-connected, allowing riders to string together loops of varying length and difficulty. Many trails overlap with the hiking network, so expect foot traffic on weekends and ride accordingly.

Trail Etiquette & Rules

Best Times to Ride

Weekday mornings offer the least trail traffic. Avoid riding immediately after rain — wet granite ledges are extremely slippery and trail erosion worsens when trails are muddy. Fall and late spring offer the best conditions.

Getting There & Parking

The South Border Road parking lot in Medford is the most popular starting point for mountain bikers. It provides quick access to the western trail network. See our Parking & Directions guide for all lot locations and weekend tips.
